Parallel Programming Workshop

Abstract
The aim of this workshop is to give people who already have some programming experience an introduction into the basics of parallel programming. The focus is on programming models, MPI, OpenMP and HPF, domain decomposition, load balancing and parallel numerics. Language support is given for Fortran, C and C++. The course was developed by HLRS, EPCC (MPI-1), SSC (HPF) and ZHR (VAMPIR). Hands-on sessions will allow users to immediately test and understand what the basic constructs of MPI and OpenMP are meant to do. Message Passing with MPI is the major programming model on large distributed-memory systems in high-performance computing. HPF is a programming model suitable for data-parallel problems. OpenMP is dedicated to shared memory systems. The workshop is split into following parts:
  • Parallel programming models, an overview, and MPI-1 (1 ½ days)
  • MPI optimization and tools (half-day)
  • Data decomposition and HPF (half-day)
  • Domain decomposition for structured and unstructured grids, load balancing, particle based domain decomposition, object oriented parallel programming (one day)
  • OpenMP (half-day)
  • Parallel numerics (half-day)

The course language is German. All slides and course materials are in English.
